We have a Permanent Opportunity within Auckland Council’s Environmental Monitoring, Research and Evaluation unit
We are looking for an environmental specialist to assist with Auckland Council’s environmental monitoring programmes, with a particular focus on collecting data from our hydrological monitoring network and working with the team to maintain the network.
Auckland Council is responsible for managing Auckland’s environment and land-use as well as supporting community and economic development. The Environmental Specialist position sits in the Research, Investigations and Monitoring Unit (RIMU), which provides high-quality evidence to decision makers and Aucklanders to assist with policy development, implementation and evaluation.
Interested? As an Environmental Specialist, you’ll be involved in assisting with the delivery and design of field monitoring programmes, deploying instruments and then collecting data, focussing on freshwater water quality and ecology. The role also extends to data analysis, interpretation and reporting.
Key requirements of the role include providing high-quality monitoring information, advice and assistance to both internal and external clients and supporting continuous improvement under our ISO 9001:2008 quality assurance system. In addition to having excellent written and verbal communication skills, you’ll also enjoy coming up with innovative solutions to deploy environmental monitoring equipment and to manage complex ecological/monitoring databases. Having a passion for the outdoors and upholding an excellent health and safety attitude is critical.
The role requires experience in environmental monitoring and a post-graduate degree or equivalent qualification in environmental science. An understanding of New Zealand’s regulatory framework and local government processes coupled with a skipper qualification and scientific diving qualification would be desirable.
A current NZ driving licence is essential.
