Review of Australian Standards AS3778 series – Dec 2022 update

Standards Australia Technical Committee CE-024 advises on standards relating to Measurement Of Water Flow In Open Channels and Closed Conduits.

AHA and a number of AHA members are part of this Technical Committee, which has overseen a review of the AS 3778 series of standards: Measurement of water flow in open channels, particularly those which are more than 10 years old.

 

Updates to 19 of the AS 3778 series standards have already been published.

A working group of the Technical Committee CE-024 is now recommending updating a further seven AS 3778 standards by identical adoption of the updated ISO standard.

Standards that the review recommends should be replaced

AS 3778.1-2009 Measurement of water flow in open channels – Vocabulary and symbols

  • The ISO standard on which the AS is based has been replaced by ISO 772:2022 Hydrometry — Vocabulary and symbols
  • The review recommends accept the updated ISO in full to replace the current AS.

AS 3778.2.3-2001 Measurement of water flow in open channels – General – Determination of the stage-discharge relationship

  • The ISO standard on which the AS is based has been replaced by ISO 18320:2020 Hydrometry — Measurement of liquid flow in open channels — Determination of the stage–discharge relationship
  • The review recommends accept the updated ISO in full to replace the current AS.

AS 3778.4.7-1991 Measurement of water flow in open channels – Measurement using flow gauging structures – Rectangular, trapezoidal and U-shaped flumes

  • The ISO standard on which the AS is based has been replaced by ISO 4359:2022 Flow measurement structures — Rectangular, trapezoidal and U-shaped flumes
  • The review recommends accept the updated ISO in full to replace the current AS.

AS 3778.6.3-1992 Measurement of water flow in open channels – Measuring devices, instruments and equipment – Calibration of rotating element current-meters in straight open tanks

  • The ISO standard on which the AS is based has been replaced by ISO 3455:2021 Hydrometry — Calibration of current-meters in straight open tanks
  • The review recommends accept the updated ISO in full to replace the current AS.

AS 3778.6.5-2001 Measurement of water flow in open channels – Measuring devices, instruments and equipment – Water level measuring devices

  • The ISO standard on which the AS is based has been replaced by ISO 4373:2022 Hydrometry — Water level measuring devices
  • The review recommends accept the updated ISO in full to replace the current AS.

AS 3778.6.6-2008 Liquid flow measurement in open channels – Measuring devices, instruments and equipment – Cableway systems for stream gauging

  • The ISO standard on which the AS is based has been replaced by ISO 4375:2014 Hydrometry — Cableway systems for stream gauging
  • The review recommends accept the updated ISO in full to replace the current AS.

AS 3778.6.8-1992 Measurement of water flow in open channels – Measuring devices, instruments and equipment – Position fixing equipment for hydrometric boats

  • The ISO standard on which the AS is based has been replaced by ISO 6420:2016 Hydrometry — Position fixing equipment for hydrometric boats
  • The review recommends accept the updated ISO in full to replace the current AS.
