This paper will examine the traditional role of the hydrographer as it changes to meet the environmental awareness in today’s society.

With ever increasing industrialisation and population growth, increased loadings are being placed on existing sewer systems. Failure of the system to meet the community’s needs can result in extensive damage to the environment.

Traditionally, hydrographers have collected streamflow, water quality and meteorological data for water supply and flood control purposes. This role is now expanding to that of an assessor of sewer system performance.
