Course overview
AHA delivered Industry Subject CC4 Hydrometric site operations introduces the student to planning the operation and maintenance of site, instruments and equipment. They need to understand the legal, client requirements, organisation standard operating procedures and work instructions, Work Health and Safety (WHS) standards and practices.
The student will gain an understanding of relevant National Industry Guidelines.
The student will be able to maintain the site and
- Assess effectiveness of maintenance
- Apply proactive maintenance principles
- Use hand and power tools
- Undertake work in accordance with WHS standards,
- Undertake Risk assessments
- Use appropriate PPE
- Minimise environmental impacts
- Assess vehicle and foot access under all weather conditions
- Record and report O&M activities
The student will test, maintain and calibrate instruments, equipment and systems and must demonstrate:
- Knowledge of hydrographic sensors including electrical conductivity, water level and rainfall
- The use of test and calibration equipment
- Basic electronics, circuits, voltage and multi-meter usage
- Ability to access and understand standard operating procedures and manufacturers specs
- Ability to undertake routine maintenance activities, identify and rectify potential problems
- Use computer systems to undertake testing and recording of test results
- Develop maintenance schedules
- Work within WHS guidelines
- Demonstrate an knowledge of appropriate instrumentation housing and shelters
- Proper storage and transport of calibration equipment.
The student will operate in site equipment to optimise monitoring site data accuracy and demonstrate
- Knowledge of how a data logger is connected to various sensors and sensor outputs
- How to check sensor accuracy in field, understand acceptable tolerances and how to adjust reading or recalibrate sensor
- How to download the data logger and record field check values.
The student will understand the steps relating to decommissioning or closing a monitoring site and the site restoration required. Focus on reducing environmental & WHS impacts.
The student will be able to identifying issues, prioritising rectification and reporting operation and maintenance repairs and understand
- Agency Reporting requirements and processes for various levels of maintenance
- Assessing and identifying existing and potential operational problems
- Appreciation of agency expectations in terms of who or what level is responsible for rectifying specific types of issues.
- Know how to assess existing and potential issues when on site (routine visit) and remotely (telemetry)
- Understand reasons and drivers for high priority responses / rectification. With reference to SLAs
- Understand the agency procedures for completion of repairs – e.g. instrumentation repairs, instrument replacement, major capital works (e.g. relocating site)
