Abstract
The Kaituna River Re-diversion and Te Awa o Ngatoroirangi / Maketū Estuary Enhancement Project has returned 20% of the flow of the Kaituna River following a bypass put in place in 1956 which diverted the river away from the estuary. These works, accompanied by creation of 20 hectares of new salt-marsh wetlands and the removal of bunds and causeways blocking tidal flows within the estuary, are part of a wider effort to enhance ecological and cultural values in partnership with Te Arawa and the community. Pim de Monchy spoke about the project’s design and implementation phases, the modelling and construction challenges, and the early results from monitoring.
