What will I learn?
The AHA Training Week comprises in-person training by industry experts in hydrographic basics, real-time water quality monitoring and groundwater monitoring.
Three courses are on offer;
- Real-time water quality monitoring
- Groundwater monitoring
- Introduction to hydrometric monitoring
- Hydrometric data processing
Each course has limited attendance, so book early to secure your place.
Course: Real-time water quality monitoring
This course is designed for water quality practitioners in sampling, time series monitoring and analysis for early career hydrographers as well as consultants, suppliers and managers.
The course will include theory and background, hands on training with best calibration practices, and a visit to a local site for the practical component of the training.
Course Content
- What is Water Quality?
- Why do we care about water quality?
- How do we measure water quality?
- Objectives of monitoring
- Site selection
- Monitoring method selection (pumped vs in-situ vs internal/standalone)
- Data collection method (telemetered vs periodic download)
- Base requirements of real-time monitoring
- Cleaning
- Maintenance
- Calibration
- Overview of the big 5 parameters and why we measure them
- pH; Dissolved Oxygen; Turbidity; Conductivity and temperature; Turbidity
- Data pathways/management
- Highlight the density of data from real-time
- Leads into the data management and QAQC sections.
- Evolving Technologies
- Possible vs Impossible
Attendees who complete the three-day training will receive a Certificate of Attendance.
Course: Groundwater monitoring
This course is designed for water quality practitioners in sampling, time series monitoring, and analysis roles.
Over the three days, this course will include:
- Groundwater 101
- Management considerations
- Why collections are made
- Measuring parameters to understand variable density in coastal groundwater and groundwater-surface water interactions
- Design of monitoring networks
- General groundwater level measurement and monitoring
- Groundwater sampling
- Contouring to understand groundwater flow directions
- How the data is used
The course will include a visit to a local groundwater monitoring station for the practical component of the training.
Attendees who complete the three-day training will receive a Certificate of Attendance.
Course: Introduction to hydrometric monitoring
This course is designed for early-career hydrographers as well as consultants, suppliers and managers in the industry. Over the three days, this course will cover:
- Water Level Sensing
- Manual Discharge Measurement (Theory and Practical)
- Hydrometric Site Operation and Maintenance
- Surveying (Theory and Practical)
- Discharge Rating Curves Overview
- Water Quality Sampling
- Hydrometric Data Management and Reporting.
The course will include a visit to a nearby stream gauging station for the practical component of the training.
Attendees who complete the three-day training will receive a partial Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) towards the following Units of Competency in the Diploma of Water Industry Operations (NWP50118):
- NWPHYD007 Stream Discharge Measurement
- NWPHYD009 Undertake Surveying of Monitoring Sites
Course: Introduction to Hydrometric Data Processing
Course Content
- Introduction to data management and processing
- Why is data management important?
- Hydstra Overview
- What attributes do we need in a good software?
- Power of the Software
- In-depth overview of the key elements of establishing a good Hydrometric Data Management System.
- Workflow
- From the field to data processing and reporting
- Practical Component
- Theory into practice with processing raw csv data sets to process and report using your own software package.
There will be emphasis on how the data set is verified, treated and the use of appropriate quality codes.
Students are required to bring their own laptop. A copy of the Hydstra software will be provided at the workshop.
This course is designed to meet the requirements of the NWPHYD005 – Process and report hydrometric data and a certificate of completion will be provided upon completion.
