The Australian Hydrographers Association is pleased to announce our inaugural Water Monitoring Skills Training Week.

Where: Darwin, Northern Territory
Join with other water quality professionals around Australia for three days of deep learning in Australia’s majestic Top End.

The Program
- Monday, 16 September 2024 – 5pm Welcome Reception and Exhibition

- Wednesday, 18 September 2024 – All-day Training Courses and Exhibition
- Thursday, 19 September 2024 – All-day Training Courses and Exhibition
All attendees are invited to the Welcome Reception on Monday evening, at the training venue – the beautiful Darwin Hilton.
There, you’ll meet others in your industry and enjoy an evening of networking and relaxation while taking in the exhibitor and sponsor trade displays.
Over the next three days, you’ll then immerse yourself in deep learning from our experts in one of the following courses.
What will I learn?
The AHA Training Week comprises in-person training by industry experts in hydrographic basics, real-time water quality monitoring and groundwater monitoring.
Three courses are on offer, with attendees selecting one course for the full three days of training. The courses are:
- Introduction to hydrometric monitoring
- Real-time water quality monitoring
- Groundwater monitoring

Course: Introduction to hydrometric monitoring
This course is designed for early-career hydrographers as well as consultants, suppliers and managers in the industry. Over the three days, this course will cover:
- Water Level Sensing
- Manual Discharge Measurement (Theory and Practical)
- Hydrometric Site Operation and Maintenance
- Surveying (Theory and Practical)
- Discharge Rating Curves Overview
- Water Quality Sampling
- Hydrometric Data Management and Reporting.
The course will include a visit to a nearby stream gauging station for the practical component of the training.
Attendees who complete the three-day training will receive a partial Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) towards the following Units of Competency in the Diploma of Water Industry Operations (NWP50118):
- NWPHYD007 Stream Discharge Measurement
- NWPHYD009 Undertake Surveying of Monitoring Sites
Course: Real-time water quality monitoring

Attendees who complete the three-day training will receive a Certificate of Attendance.
Course: Groundwater monitoring
This course is designed for water quality practitioners in sampling, time series monitoring, and analysis roles.
Over the three days, this course will include:
- Groundwater 101
- Management considerations
- Why collections are made
- Measuring parameters to understand variable density in coastal groundwater and groundwater-surface water interactions
- Design of monitoring networks
- General groundwater level measurement and monitoring
- Groundwater sampling
- Contouring to understand groundwater flow directions
- How the data is used
The course will include a visit to a local groundwater monitoring station for the practical component of the training.
Attendees who complete the three-day training will receive a Certificate of Attendance.
